ABSTRACT

Due to the outbreak of COVID 19, an online bilingual curriculum was conducted via "Google Meet." The learning material was developed and implemented by using a smartphone application, STEMUP, based on augmented reality (AR) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies. This study investigated the oral performance and perceptions of learning with STEMUP of ninety non-English major students from several colleges at a technical university in Taiwan. Data were collected from pre- and post-tests and a questionnaire survey. Results indicated that students significantly improved their oral performance and recorded their positive perceptions. Students' oral performance significantly depended on their English proficiency. Their perceptions were not significant related to their English proficiency, gender, or college. Instant feedback and evaluation provided by ASR technology and online "Google" text-to-speech service both embedded in STEMUP helped students notice, modify and improve their listening and speaking skills. They were satisfied with the bilingual curriculum, which helped them increase understanding about content knowledge by the teacher's explanation in Chinese, and improve English listening and speaking skills by learning with STEMUP. This study is a good start in creating an interactive and communicative learning environment where translanguaging is effectively integrated with innovative technologies.

ABSTRACT

Background: Mobile phones have become a widely accepted learning mode due to the impact of COVID-19. This study explores the mobile technology acceptance, among nursing students at selected educational institutions in South India. Materials and Methods: Quantitative cross-sectional descriptive design. First-year 176 B.Sc. nursing students who underwent blended learning were selected by the purposive sampling method. The tool "Technology Acceptance Model" was used to collect responses. Bivariate analysis was used to determine the relationship between the demographic and study-related variables with the mobile technology acceptance using SPSS version 25.0. Results: The majority 73.9% of the students belonged to the age group of 18-19 years, females 76.7% and, 98.9% were unmarried. Among the constructs of TAM, a mean (SD) value of 22.08 (2.26) was found for material (mobile device audio/video) characteristics the mean (SD) value was 22.08 (2.26), attitude about use 17.58 (1.95), behavioral intention 17.46 (1.78) and system characteristics 17.21 (2.27). The mobile technology acceptance revealed that 126 (71.6%) strongly agreed, 49 (27.8%) agreed, and 1 (0.6%) was neutral with a mean (SD) of 105.19 (8.68), respectively. A positive correlation was found between the system characteristics, material characteristics, perceived ease to use, perceived usefulness, attitude about the use, behavioral intention with a P value <0.001. There was a statistically significant association between Mobile technology acceptance and time spent by the students for independent studies shown the Chi-square value of 12.7, with P value <0.05. Conclusion: Nursing students had a positive acceptance and behavior toward smartphone use.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of current trends in the implementation of effective socio-economic solutions and their development under the influence of COVID-19 is made. The prospects of using innovative and telecommunication technologies, robotics, big data processing methods and knowledge management methods in the formation and management of global economic clusters were noted. The clustering of delivery robots under pandemic conditions by methods of machine learning was carried out. The peculiarities of COVID-19 assessment as the main formative factor influencing socio-economic decision-making on a global scale are disclosed. The necessity and possible consequences of adopting and implementing new decisions designed to minimize the negative effects of COVID-19 on Russian and global economies are discussed. It is noted that the design and development of innovations in the system of management and transfer of knowledge is an indispensable condition for the successful development of future socio-economic relations. On the basis of the obtained results conclusions are made about the background of the applied solutions, about the vector of their direction and makes it clear what should be paid special attention to when assessing the current situation in society and determine which solutions are most effective and how the social order should be transformed to successfully withstand the new challenges. © 2023 SPIE.

With the use of blockchain, Internet of Things, virtual platform/telecommunications network, artificial intelligence and the fourth industrial revolution, the essential demand for digital transition within the health care settings has increased as an outcome of the 2019 coronavirus illness outbreak and the fourth industrial revolution. The evolution of virtual environments with three-dimensional (3D) spaces and avatars, known as metaverse, has slowly gained acceptance in the field of health care. These environments may be especially useful for patient-facing platforms (such as platforms for telemedicine), functional uses (such as meeting management), digital education (such as modeled medical and surgical learning), treatments and diagnoses. PurposeCitizens often perceive surveillance by government authorities as oppressive and, hence, demonstrate reluctance in value co-creation from such services. This study aims to investigate the challenges and benefits of citizen empowerment through technology-driven surveillance or "smart surveillance.”Design/methodology/approachGuided by Dynamic Capability theory, the authors conduct in-depth interviews with officers in-charge of surveillance in smart cities. Given the contemporary advancements, this approach allows a retrospective and real-time understanding of interviewees' experiences with smart surveillance.FindingsThe authors develop five propositions for citizen empowerment through smart surveillance to summarize the findings of this study.Research limitations/implicationsThis study advances the relevance of Dynamic Capability in public administration.Practical implicationsSmart city authorities and policymakers may leverage the insights provided in this study to design appropriate policies for smart surveillance.Originality/valueThe authors find that factors such as digital technology and infrastructure, information management, skill divide and perceived return on investment may influence citizen empowerment through smart surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Research trust in e-government has increased through the decades. Trust in e-government is an important instrument for citizens who intend to use digital services. The aim of this research is to measure and provide an overview of how the level of people trust Jakarta Kini super-application as an e-Government in DKI Jakarta. This study uses a factor score analysis with the Mplus program and OECD method to characterize the trust level of the valid instruments SRMR, CFI, and TLI values. The pre-test results on the validity and reliability of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with 1687 respondents. The results of this study indicate that the level of trust of the people in DKI Jakarta is in the medium to high category. It was found based on the factor score value in accordance with the average level of trust in the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, which was 7.5 out of 10, with a scale of 1 indicating no trust at all, to a scale of 10 indicating full trust from the entire population. This level belongs to the medium to full trust level category. The lesson learned is that the government must take action to increase trust, such as identifying factors affecting the public use of the Jakarta Kini super-application. This study provides a discussion of the findings, and limitations and further proposes potential directions for future research.

ABSTRACT

Information and communication are sectors of technology made up of telecommunications companies, telephone companies, and internet service providers. The present study examined the impacts of working remotely from home (WFH) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adopting a case study perspective, this study employed twenty participants in the telecommunication industry. Participants took part in online questionnaires, interviews, and a focus group that captured employee engagement and job satisfaction as significant factors in an organization's remote work team experiences. This qualitative descriptive study attempts to describe the unknown impact of job satisfaction and employee engagement strategies while working in remote teams during COVID-19. This study also provided evidence to improve, understand, and enable the development of leadership strategies from the perspective of management and non-management employees in the telecommunication industry. Using Braun & Clarke's framework of the six-phase thematic analysis was crucial to the study by examining how engagement and satisfaction were affected by five job characteristics when working from home: Challenges from working from home are problems and situations affecting an organization's flow of communication by compromising with outside interruptions that is transparent in work assignments or tasks. The advantages and Motivations of Working from home include balancing work-life, improving work efficiency, and providing greater control. Strategies of Employee Engagement to Enhance Satisfaction inspire employees to feel a tremendous societal purpose for the company that employs them. Measuring Employee Engagement and Satisfaction is when employee satisfaction measures how content/happy employees are with their role and what comes with it. Strategies Used by Management to Influence Motivation at Work, when achieved, result in productivity and success of an organization. The findings revealed that employee engagement and job satisfaction are necessary conditions for remote work teams. Most managers preferred easy access to information, regular meetings, and monitoring productivity. Most employees prefer better pay, compensation, and an excellent work relationship. Other factors that can improve job satisfaction in telecommunication companies include time to work split shifts that would benefit the employer, employee, and the organization. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The availability of low-cost computing and digital telecommunication in the 1980s made telehealth practicable. Telehealth has the capacity to improve healthcare access and outcomes for patients while reducing healthcare costs across a wide range of health conditions and situations. OBJECTIVE: This study compares the adoption, advantages, and challenges of telehealth services between high-income (HICs) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. The key search terms were: "Telehealth", "Telehealth in HICs", "Telehealth in LMICs", "Telehealth before COVID-19", "Telehealth during COVID-19". We searched exhaustively ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and EMBASE databases from 2012. Booleans OR/AND were combined with key search terms to increase relevant search results. The literature search and selection process followed the Sample, Phenomena of Interest, Design, Evaluation, and Research (SPIDER) question format. RESULTS: The adoption of telehealth before COVID-19 was generally low in both HICs and LMICs. The impact of COVID-19 accelerated the adoption of telehealth at the facility level but not nationwide in both high-income countries and LMICs. The rapid adoption of telehealth at the facility level in both high-income and LMICs introduced several challenges that are unique to each country and need to be addressed. CONCLUSION: The lack of national policies and regulations is making the adoption of telehealth at the national level challenging in both high and low-middle-income countries. Governments and Stakeholders of healthcare must consider telehealth as a healthcare procedure that should be deployed in clinical working procedures. Primary quantitative and qualitative studies must be conducted to address challenges encountered during the pilot implementation of telehealth services in both high-income countries and LMICs before and during pandemics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify potential barriers to care, this study examined the general psychiatry outpatient new appointment availability in the US, including in-person and telepsychiatry appointments, comparing results between insurance types (Medicaid vs. private insurance), states, and urbanization levels. METHOD: This mystery shopper study investigated 5 US states selected according to Mental Health America Adult Ranking and geography to represent the US mental health care system. Clinics across five selected states were stratified sampled by county urbanization levels. Calls were made during 05/2022-07/2022. Collected data included contact information accuracy, appointment availability, wait time (days), and related information. RESULTS: Altogether, 948 psychiatrists were sampled in New York, California, North Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming. Overall contact information accuracy averaged 85.3%. Altogether, 18.5% of psychiatrists were available to see new patients with a significantly longer wait time for in-person than telepsychiatry appointments (median = 67.0 days vs median = 43.0 days, p < 0.01). The most frequent reason for unavailability was provider not taking new patients (53.9%). Mental health resources were unevenly distributed, favoring urban areas. CONCLUSION: Psychiatric care has been severely restricted in the US with low accessibility and long wait times. Transitioning to telepsychiatry represents a potential solution for rural disparities in access.

ABSTRACT

Based on a broad definition of the digital economy, this study constructs a digital technology capital measure-ment framework and measures China's digital technology capital services from 2002 to 2018 to illustrate the growth of digital technology. In addition, the relationship between digital technology and economic growth is examined using the growth accounting method and econometric panel models from the perspective of the substitution and penetration effects of information and communication technologies. The measurement results show that China's digital technology capital services grew faster than non-digital ones from 2002 to 2018. In terms of the substitution effect, the contribution of traditional capital to economic growth is diminishing, whereas digital technology capital's contribution is expanding. Regarding the penetration effect, the contribution of digital technology capital to labor productivity is gradually overtaking that of traditional capital, with the impact varying by sector. These results may provide developing countries with a strategy to seek new devel-opment drivers and sustain economic growth in the post-pandemic era.

ABSTRACT

Video calling emerged as an important resource during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to reconnect child and family, bringing the possibility of communication even during isolation. The objective of this study was to understand the experiences of families who communicated with their children through video calls during isolation by COVID-19 in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This was a qualitative study employing the theory of symbolic interactionism and the research method of grounded theory, with 14 families of children in PICU who used video calling as a communication resource. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis revealed the main category of "Connecting to (re)connect: Video calling as a resource to unite families and children in PICU in the COVID-19 era," from which a theoretical model explaining the experience was built. Video calling is an important resource to mitigate the effects of family-child separation during hospitalization, and its use is encouraged in other contexts.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper aims to present a hybrid approach to measure the efficiency of virtual contact centers (VCCs) started during the pandemic and benchmark them for service performance. The results are used to plot the VCC's efficiency score (performance) and customer perception (Importance) to propose appropriate strategies.Design/methodology/approachUsing the survey method, 854 responses were collected from customers who used VCC services during the pandemic. This data was then employed to assess the performance of VCCs using SERVPERF and DEA methods, followed by the development of the model for performance analysis.FindingsResults reveal the ranking of different VCCs started during the pandemic for the telecom company using SERVPERF and DEA methods. Further, the performance analysis model highlighted the strategies appropriate for each VCCs.Practical implicationsThe findings add to the body of knowledge on how multiple service units of a large organization can assess service efficiency utilizing a combination of SERVPERF-DEA. The present work also contributes to the performance analysis field by proposing a model to assess the service centers and provide improvement guidelines.Originality/valueThe work is one of the first to assess the service efficiency of the VCCs started during the pandemic by using a unique hybrid approach of SERVPERF and DEA. This approach provides a direction to whom to benchmark and to what degree service quality should be improved. Further, the study proposes a unique performance analysis model based on performance scores and customer perception.

ABSTRACT

The reason for researching the satisfaction of the student population with telecommunications services in the Republic of Croatia is related to the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and online classes, where numerous problems have been shown in the functioning of transmission and data exchange technology over the Internet. 164 students studying in the Republic of Croatia participated in the research. Three research goals were set, which are presented through research goals and hypotheses. For the hypothesis H1, a statistically significant correlation between the customer satisfaction variable with the quality of services of the current telecommunications operator and the satisfaction with the speed of the internet of the current teleoperator was identified (rho = 729, p < 05). The H2 hypothesis identified a statistically significant connection between the customer satisfaction variable with the quality of services of the current telecommunications operator and the satisfaction with the price of the service of the current telecommunications operator (rho =, 685, p <, 05). When processing the hypothesis H3, a statistically significant correlation between the customer satisfaction variable with the quality of services of the current telecommunications operator was identified) and the work of customer service. (. =, 677, p <, 05). The regression analysis (Forward method) included 10 predictor variables. Four predictor variables have identified statistically significant predictive capacity. Other variables do not have a statistically significant contribution and models in which they are included are not considered further. With four predictor variables, 71.3% of the variance of the criteria is explained (dependent variable: satisfied/on the quality of service of the current operator). Variables that have a statistically significant predictive value are as follows: Satisfaction with the quality of service of the current operator). The variables that have a statistically significant predictive value are the following: Satisfaction with the Internet speed of the current operator (beta=0.311, t=7.081, p<.5), Satisfaction with the price of the current operator's service beta=0.232, t=5.197, p<.5), Satisfaction with customer service of the current operator (beta=0.210, t=4.368, p<.5), I believe that my consumer rights are respected by the telecommunication operators beta=0.108, t=2.386, p<.5). These findings are applicable to companies whose activities are related to the telecommunications industry, since user satisfaction is the most frequently investigated variable in all numerous research so far. Recommendations for future research include the need to repeat the survey in order to test previous predictor variables and identify new variables, if any. The variable "I believe that my consumer rights are respected by telecommunications operators" has so far not been identified by regression analysis in any previous survey. Many researches have been conducted from the beginning of 2000 to 2010, and after that their number is decreasing. Since we are in the digital age and the importance of IoT is growing, and experience with the quality and strength of signals, and hence the quality of services are different, the importance of carrying out these investigations is increasing.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased research outputs in telemedicine over the last couple of years. One solution to the COVID-19 pandemic as revealed in literature is to leverage telemedicine for accessing health care remotely. In this survey paper, we review several articles on eHealth and Telemedicine with emphasis on the articles' focus area, including wireless technologies and architectures in eHealth, communications protocols, Quality of Service, and Experience Standards, among other considerations. In addition, we provide an overview of telemedicine for new readers. This survey reviews several telecommunications technologies currently being proposed along with their standards and challenges. In general, an encompassing survey on the developments in telemedicine technology, standards, and protocols is presented while acquainting researchers with several open issues. Special mention of the state-of-the-art specialist application areas are presented. We conclude the survey paper by presenting important research challenges and potential future directions as they pertain to telemedicine technology.

ABSTRACT

PurposeCommunity health is placed under the limelight during the COVID-19 crisis, providing a unique context for investigating citizens' health-privacy tradeoff in accepting social surveillance technology. To elucidate this tradeoff dilemma, an extended privacy calculus framework integrated with the Health Belief Model, legislative protection, and individual collectivism was examined using the case of national contact-tracing apps.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses were tested through PLS-SEM analysis with data collected from a survey on Bluezone – a national app in Vietnam.FindingsThe results indicated the negative impact of privacy concerns, which was offset by the positive effect of perceived benefits in using contact-tracing apps. The effect size of perceived benefits on usage frequency was twice as large as that of privacy concerns. Individual collectivism was revealed as a mitigator of the tradeoff dilemma, as it was positively associated with perceived benefits, whereas legislative protection had no such role. Citizens may perceive legislation protection as invalid when the technologies are developed, implemented, and monitored by the authorities.Originality/valueThe theoretical contributions lie in the extension of the privacy calculus model as well as its application in the context of mobile health apps and surveillance technology. The study empirically corroborated that the privacy calculus theory holds when technologies move along the pervasiveness spectrum. This study also provided actionable insights for policymakers and developers who advocate the mass acceptance of national contact-tracing apps.

The pandemic situation due to covid-19 has disrupted routine activities such as attending classes physically in educational institutions, which insisted on moving towards online education with the help of advent and increased uses of new telecommunication services. Service quality is the prerequisite for customer satisfaction. Service quality assessment is crucial to ensure increased customer satisfaction in any service. Typically, it is not easy to evaluate service quality because of opacity in the information, and incompleteness characteristics of problems. With the collected data through an online survey, this study aims to analyze the facts that influence the students' perception regarding the impact of telecommunication service quality on online education during the pandemic situation. Initially, some relevant criteria are derived from literature reviews. The proposed model is exerted to evaluate the quality of the online education and telecommunication service in Bangladesh during the covid-19 pandemic with the participation of 350 students answering 39 questions. The collected data is analyzed to assess the current state of service quality by evaluating the students' satisfaction using the entropy technique. The findings of the study suggest that the online education system in Bangladesh is not interactive enough, and the telecommunication service quality here is not sufficient for this purpose. Telecommunication challenges such as poor network quality, overpricing structure of telecommunication services and slow connection speed must be resolved to ensure satisfactory quality of online education.

ABSTRACT

The advancement of new technologies and the increasingly inseparable presence of logistics systems in the daily life of cities, industries, companies, and society has been modifying how logistics processes are implemented in these environments based on technological innovations, internet, virtual businesses, mobility, and the use of multi-channel distribution. Together with these changes, urban centers have been connecting to the smart city concept as the understanding of this theme advances into the debate and improvements in the agendas of either public or private management. This research proposes a conceptual model for evaluating logistics maturity in the smart city dimensions. The method has a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive approach, supported by the Delphi method, which uses a questionnaire and interview as a data collection instrument with specialists on the subject. We identified that qualifying logistics in the urban environment is complex and requires a specialized look at identifying cities' structural, geographic, regional, social, and environmental characteristics. As a social–technological contribution, the proposition of the logistics maturity assessment scale in smart city dimensions can serve as an evaluative model of logistics, which means helping in urban planning and strategic management of cities, offering smarter solutions to the realities of urban spaces.

ABSTRACT

In the current pandemic, global issues have caused health issues as well as economic downturns. At the beginning of every novel virus outbreak, lockdown is the best possible weapon to reduce the virus spread and save human life as the medical diagnosis followed by treatment and clinical approval takes significant time. The proposed COUNTERSAVIOR system aims at an Artificial Intelligence of Medical Things (AIoMT), and an edge line computing enabled and Big data analytics supported tracing and tracking approach that consumes global positioning system (GPS) spatiotemporal data. COUNTERSAVIOR will be a better scientific tool to handle any virus outbreak. The proposed research discovers the prospect of applying an individual's mobility to label mobility streams and forecast a virus such as COVID-19 pandemic transmission. The proposed system is the extension of the previously proposed COUNTERACT system. The proposed system can also identify the alternative saviour path concerning the confirmed subject's cross-path using GPS data to avoid the possibility of infections. In the undertaken study, dynamic meta direct and indirect transmission, meta behavior, and meta transmission saviour models are presented. In conducted experiments, the machine learning and deep learning methodologies have been used with the recorded historical location data for forecasting the behavior patterns of confirmed and suspected individuals and a robust comparative analysis is also presented. The proposed system produces a report specifying people that have been exposed to the virus and notifying users about available pandemic saviour paths. In the end, we have represented 3-D tracker movements of individuals, 3-D contact analysis of COVID-19 and suspected individuals for 24 h, forecasting and risk classification of COVID-19, suspected and safe individuals.
